Saving Cash With 52 Envelopes

With two kids, two parents, a dog, and one salary, we look for ways to trick ourselves into saving beyond our monthly expenses. Here’s a method we are trying in order to save some money, recycle those holiday envelopes, and stay in touch with friends throughout the year.

Hubs had told me he read about this envelope saving trick, and Peanut and I took it to another level: Basically, you get 52 envelopes, and number them for each week of the year. You put that amount of dollars in each envelope, and by the end of the year, you have $1,378.

FIRST: Dig through the paper recycling pile for the holiday envelopes: (Junk mail envelopes work really well, also).

SECOND: either tape a piece of paper over the middle, or, use the labels you found at a second-hand store for cheap, and stick over the addressee:

THIRD: clean up the edges and arrange by size, smallest to largest. Number each envelope “Week 1, Week 2, Week 3…” and place in a box or small crate.

Since we are in the third week of the year, we went ahead and added money to 3 of the envelopes. I also noted the people on the return address of the re-used envelope. IT reminds me to call or write them.                                   Once you add money, you cross off the front label so you know for the next week that one is done. I had Peanut put a recurring reminder on the smart phone and the family calendar.

NOTE: you do NOT have to do these in order! For example maybe when you get a tax refund you want to fill up Week 52 and Week 51, so that come December, you only have to deal with the smaller numbers like Week 1 and Week 2.

POINT IS: you have money for gift buying, or for that new mattress you need or for a vacation or for your child’s college fund. And it cost you so little per week to do!
